PiPod Podcast Industry News - September 4, 2007

Hi {first_name}

Welcome to the latest installment of PiPod Podcast Industry News.

Gen Y tuning out to TV, and in to Web 2.0
Australians are tuning out to TV, with a 6 per cent drop in viewing audiences over the past five years. 16-39 year olds are switching off in droves - this group recording a 17 per cent decline, according to TV ratings organisation OzTAM.

Advertisers using traditional marketing channels can't ignore these stats - nor the new generation of entertainment that is attracting viewers in droves. Podcasts, web video and the seemingly endless content available on the web - have become the entertainment of choice for Gen X and Y around the globe.

ABC Podcast stats through the roof
New stats from the ABC have shown that podcast downloads are going through the roof. Podcasts, both video and audio, from the nation's broadcaster increased from an average of 2 million downloads per month in the first half of the year, to a staggering 3.5 million+ in July.

A statement from the broadcaster said: “These figures demonstrate that the ABC is fulfilling on its promise to deliver the very latest offerings from ABC TV, Radio and News to audiences whenever and wherever they want to receive it, and on whichever device they would like to receive it.”

People's Choice Podcast Awards Winners
The results are in for the 3rd Annual People's Choice Podcast Awards. Over 4000 podcast 'shows' were nominated; the list was whittled down to 220 shows which were voted on over a two-week period. Taking out top honours for Best Video Podcast was quirky cult favourite, Ask a Ninja.

Food for thought
The Culinary Institute of America has began a new series of podcasts featuring the school's celebrity graduates. The launch issue features a 15 minute audio interview with Cat Cora, whose claim to fame is being the first female Iron Chef. Called "Insight from the Inside" the programs are a great use of the podcast medium - giving aspiting chefs a behind the scenes look at the world of cooking and hospitality.
